Historical South Bend building to be renovated

A ceremony will take place Saturday in downtown South Bend to celebrate the restoration of a local historical building.

The former LaSalle Hotel will be restored and updated into apartments after being closed since the 1970's.

Construction will begin tomorrow and developer Real America hopes to have the project finished and done in a year.

"The project could breathe life into the economy," says South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

"Not only is is a great thing to have an old historic property in disrepair coming back to life, but also, we're equally excited about the fact that it's going to be apartments. That means there are going to be more people living here in the heart of the city," said Buttigieg.
