ST. JOESPH, Mich. -- The annual Hoops for Hope cancer fundraiser was underway at a high school in St. Joe.The crowd from both St.Joe and Lakeshore High School were decked out in purple for the annual Hoops for Hope fundraiser started by a former Saint Joe bears player named Mattox Willams.
Mattox was also known as "Smiley" for his positive attitude and helping others during his own battle with cancer.
He would have been a senior on this year's bears team. He died last year at the age of 17 but not before starting his own non-profit to help other kids being treated for pediatric cancers.
The charity got a check $20,000 and Mattox's family was given his framed jersey from his AAU basketball coach in Benton Harbor.
