House fire spreads to home next door

SOUTH BEND, Ind. --- Firefighters were called to battle two house fires near the corner of Walnut and Ford Streets Sunday afternoon.

Officials believe the fire started in the attic of one home and spread to the vacant home next door.

"Upon arrival that one company that was the first to arrive, we had heavy smoke showing and it was mostly coming from the attic. We have roughly nine engines here, nine firefighting equipment, and five support vehicles also out here," said South Bend Fire Department Fire Marshall Chico Rodriguez.

So much backup was needed because there were two homes on fire.

No one was in either home at the time of the fire and no firefighters were injured while fighting the blaze.

Officials are in the beginning stages of the investigation to figure out the exact cause of the original  fire.
