MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- The Humane Society of St. Joseph County is needing help of the community to adopt or foster approximately 36 shelter dogs.

The dogs need to be completely clear by 12 p.m. on Aug. 18, as a new HVAC unit is set to be installed and maintenance on the floors will start on Aug. 19.

Without adequate airflow and air conditioning the adoption dog center needs to be temporarily emptied.

Those interested in adopting must complete an adoption application so staff can review and schedule appointments for families to meet and take home a dog.

The Humane Society strongly encourages applications to be submitted by August 13.

If you can't adopt but would like to still help, providing a temporary foster home is another option.

If fostering a home is an option, families are asked to commit to caring for a shelter dog through at least Monday, August 24, allowing sufficient time for the HVAC installation and floor maintenance to be completed.

Adoption fees will be waved off for all dogs through August 18.

All adoptable dogs are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, and microchipped before going home.

The Humane Society will provide foster families with the supplies needed to care for their foster dog, including Food, bedding and toys, collar, harness, and leash, and any necessary medications.

Foster applicants should complete the Humane Society’s foster application as soon as possible, preferably by Thursday, August 13, so staff have time to coordinate placements before the August 18 deadline.
