Indiana State Police investigating death of inmate at St. Joseph County Jail
ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. – Indiana State Police is investigating the death of an inmate early Monday morning at the St. Joseph County Jail.
At 4:03 a.m., a female inmate was found unresponsive and not breathing in a cell in the medical unit of the jail.
That inmate has been identified as 63-year-old Rebecca Powell.
Jail and medical staff, along with paramedics from the South Bend Fire Department, performed life-saving efforts on the inmate, who was in her 60s, but she was pronounced dead.
Per jail protocol, ISP is investigating the incident.
