One year later, many still reliving Colon tornado
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Indianapolis Motor Speedway President Doug Boles stopped by ABC57 with the 2022 Chevy Camaro SS pace car that will be on the track for the 106th running of the Indy 500.
This year’s theme is "Back Home Again in Indiana", the traditional song performed before every race.
For the first time in three years, a capacity crowd of more than 300,000 will be welcomed back to the largest sporting event in the state.
"Just like everyone, the pandemic has changed the way we think about things, the way we operate, especially in 2020 when you had the 104th Indy 500 with no fans, never happened in our history. That was a really challenging moment. Even last year when we had a reduced capacity of about 135,000 people in the grand stands, that was even difficult,” said Boles.
Boles estimates that over $100 million was lost in revenue over the past two years of the Indy 500.
