ISP Trooper shot during car chase last week released from hospital
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Sgt. Justin Heflin was discharged on July 17, after a single week in the hospital recovering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Last week, after responding to reports of a stolen vehicle, Sgt. Heflin followed the suspect to a gas station in Michigan City, where the suspect opened fire, hitting the Trooper several times before fleeing again.
“A week ago, we were in poor spirits because of the tragic shooting that happened, and to be seven days removed from that and be here waiting for him to walk out on his own is just a testament to Sergeant Hefflin’s determination," Sgt Ted Bohner said.
Sgt Heflin walked out of the Beacon Memorial Hospital in South Bend to a surprise. Family, friends, and community members honorarily saluted him and showed their respect as he made his way to his car.
Sgt Heflin has over twelve years in service and has also served in the United States Marine Corps. Sgt Bohner describes Heflin has a hero.
“He is what I think of when we think of what a good trooper is. He is like a poster child of that, and we couldn’t be more proud of him or more proud of the uniform that we all wear," Sgt Bohner said.
Sgt Tony Slocum was also there to show his respect, and agrees with Sgt Bohner, “What we did last week was heroic and it was dangerous, but he came through on the other side, and we’re happy to have that," Sgt Slocum said.
Heflin is now the third law enforcement office to have been shot in Northwest Indiana this year. However, the outpouring amount of support from the community reminds the Indiana State Police of the deep appreciation in our area.
“I bet from the time I left my car till I got to his room. There were 10 or more people telling me, “Hey, we’re thinking of you," Sgt Slocum said.
Sgt Heflin is expected to continue his recovery at home.
