Judge dismisses Indiana AG's appeal in lawsuit against St. Joseph County Police Department over alleged non-cooperation with ICE

ABC 57

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- The Indiana Attorney General's appeal in lawsuit against the St. Joseph County Police Department has been dismissed.

The lawsuit was originally filed in January 2025. AG Todd Rokita alleged that SJCPD and Sheriff Bill Redman refused to honor Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer requests for local inmates.

The county argued such compliance with federal law is up to "local discretion," but maintained there are no "written or unwritten" policies against enforcing immigration laws at the department.

In new court documents, a Court of Appeals judge ruled that, because of changes to state policy, whether law enforcement violated them would be a "backward-looking question."

The full ruling can be read below.
