June Woods Park's ribbon cutting honors former slave and community leader June Woods

NOW: June Woods Park’s ribbon cutting honors former slave and community leader June Woods

BENTON HARBOR, Mich.- The newly revamped June Woods Park opens on Sunday, August 20 with a dedication to community member June Woods.

In June 2023, Neighbors Organizing Against Racism (N.O.A.R.) announced their partnership with the Whirlpool Corporation to pay homage to history and honor Benton Harbor small business owner June Woods.

Woods, who escaped slavery, flourished his love for plants as he planted trees throughout Benton Harbor and southwest Michigan.

He's currently buried at Crystal Spring cemetery, but without a headstone, an issue N.O.A.R. is rectifying with an anonymous donor.

N.O.A.R Founder and Executive Director Trenton Bowens feels fortunate that with Whirlpool's help they've achieved so much for the community.

He predicts the dedication will be a great day for the community to enjoy the upgrades to the park including replaced basketball hoops, a turf field, upgraded play areas and newly re-painted surfaces.

In addition to the dedication, a community Funfest, with food dunk tanks and a basketball tournament, will take place at 9:00 a.m. and the ribbon cutting will happen at 3:00 p.m.
