LARA shuts down Detroit funeral home

DETROIT, Mich. – LARA suspended the licenses of Cantrell Funeral Home and the manager’s license after inspectors found several violations.

The Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) found several unsanitary conditions when inspecting the funeral home.

Jameca LaJoyce Boone, Cantrell’s designated manager, had her individual mortuary science license suspended as the funeral home was shut down.

The inspection found the following violations:

Unclean and unsanitary embalming room

Improper storage of two embalmed bodies found on April 10th that were unrefrigerated since November and December 2017

Improper storage of three additional bodies with advanced stages of decompositions, mold, and other unknown fluids

Operating with expired registrations of funeral sales and failing to assign and cancel prepaid contracts or issue refunds

Failure to deposit over $21,000 from 13 prepaid funeral contracts

Fraud, deceit, dishonesty, incompetence, and gross negligence in the practice

LARA said they will continue to enforce regulations and hold funeral homes to the highest standards for public health.
