SOUTH BEND — Some people on South Bend's west side were able to pick up free cell phones on Friday.

Life Wireless, a mobile phone service, gave away those cell phones on Lincolnway West.

The program is sponsored by the FCC and helps low-income families afford telephone service.

"It's not just for emergencies and 911, it's to get in contact with your family," said free phone recipient Marquita Brown. "It's a free phone. You do what you want with it."

Life Wireless will be giving away free cell phones again for people who qualify on Saturday afternoon.
