Local law enforcement warns of jury duty and 'Indiana DMV' scams resurging

MGN

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Elkhart County Sheriff's Office and the South Bend Police Department are warning the public of jury duty and "Indiana DMV" scams respectively.

ECSO stated they were informed that someone posing as an officer is making calls threatening to arrest citizens for not showing up for jury duty.

Authorities clarified they will never call you regarding jury duty. They encourage community members to always contact the court directly for information related to Jury Duty.

SBPD reported the "Indiana DMV" had been occurring in early June, but say the scammers are at it again.

The message claims to be from the "Indiana Department of Motor Vehicles," which is not a thing, and refers to the "North Indiana State Administrative Code," which police say is also fake.

Indiana has the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles which will use traditional mail to contact you regarding any issues about with your registration.

The text usually comes from a strange email address.

Police say if you get this phony text, do not click any links and know that it doesn't mean you have an unpaid traffic ticket.
