Local Plow Crews playing catch-up with winter weather

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- Sunday night’s heavy snowfall took many local plow companies by surprise, leaving some roadways uncleared longer than usual as crews worked to adapt.

“This is a rare event,” said Todd Collins, owner of One Tec Properties, a local snow removal company. “You find yourself scrambling to put snow blades, salt spreaders and get your trucks ready.”

The storm’s timing, marking the first snowfall of the season, meant many crews hadn’t yet transitioned to winter operations.

He and his team started plowing around midnight and continued into Monday evening, after spending much of Sunday outfitting their trucks with the proper gear.

“I went back to the shop at 7 a.m. and stayed until about 6 p.m. getting all the trucks outfitted with the snowblades and the salt spreaders,” Collins said.

While Collins’ crew worked nearly nonstop to clear major routes, they also faced challenges with travel advisories and slippery conditions.

“We try to do our due diligence in going slow, but we’re on a schedule as well,” Collins said. “I can only see out the side mirrors. So if I can't see side mirrors, I don't know that you're back there, which is unsafe.”

While driving at any time during winter weather, it’s important to go slow and leave space between your vehicle and those around you, it’s extra important to allow space on the road for snowplows.

With current conditions, it’s a good time to stock emergency kits in your vehicle with essentials like flashlights, first aid supplies, blankets, and extra clothing.
