Local projects part of MDOT's $6M commitment to local road safety improvements

BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. -- The Michigan Department of Transportation announced a $6 million commitment in federal funds for six Transportation Alternatives Program grants to improve road safety with six projects.

"MDOT is ecstatic to announce the next round of truly worthy projects in this latest TAP cycle, providing long-term social impact," State Transportation Director Bradley C. Wieferich said. “One of the key projects builds a critical connection for vulnerable road users to access the new Gordie Howe International Bridge in Detroit, while simultaneously fostering shared community and international ties."

The two local projects approved in this program include one in Van Buren County and one in Berrien County.

The project details include:

  • Van Buren County - Van Buren County Road Commission - Blue Star Trail - Separated pathway construction - $351,828
  • Berrien County - Berrien County Road Department - South Roosevelt Road Shared-Use Path - Build separated pathway, boardwalk, pedestrian bridge - $620,034
