Man arrested for allegedly trying to swim from police after firing gunshots
John Walsh KOSCIUSKO COUNTY, Ind. -- A man was arrested on Oct. 24 after neighbors alleged he was revving his vehicles and had fired a gun several times.
A Kosciusko County Sheriff's Deputy was called to a home on Dale Lane to reports of a neighbor revving his vehicles and firing gunshots. The caller identified the man as 29-year-old John Walsh.
Court documents show the deputy arrived at the location to find a camper in the driveway. He spoke to a woman inside who said she was Walsh's wife. She admitted that Walsh started several vehicles earlier that morning.
While the deputy was on scene, an Indiana Conservation Officer also responded and spoke to two hunters nearby. They confirmed hearing loud engine revving shortly before a drone was spotted overhead. After signaling at the drone to fly away, the hunters heard gunshots being fired nearby.
The deputy once again spoke to Walsh's wife who said Walsh had operated a drone and fired shots earlier on the property. At that time, the deputy saw Walsh inside the camper and told him to exit.
According to court documents, Walsh ran out through the front door away from law enforcement, leading to a short pursuit on foot. He then got into Beaver Dam Lake and began swimming away. Eventually, Walsh agreed to come back on shore because of the cold water.
Walsh told law enforcement he ran because police encounters "don't end well." He reportedly admitted to revving his engines and flying a drone but said he didn't fire any guns because he legally can't own firearms. Investigators later learned Walsh is a convicted violent felon.
After returning to the residence, law enforcement located five rifles, a pistol upper, air rifle and muzzleloader inside the couple's Jeep. After further searching the camper, they found a loaded rifle, handgun, ammunition box and six spent shell casings. All firearms were then seized.
Walsh is now charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by Serious Violent Felon and Resisting Law Enforcement.
