Man charged with Murder following shooting at party
St. Joseph County Jail ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office announced a 19-year-old was charged with Murder on Tuesday following a homicide on Sunday, March 15, in South Bend.
The 19-year-old, Riley Morgan-Reed of Rolling Prairie, has been charged with Murder and Felony Firearm Enhancement after the death of Carl Lee Bates, a 21-year-old from South Bend.
Around 2:10 a.m. Sunday, South Bend police officers responded to the 3200 block of Dunham Street following two ShotSpotter notifications, one detailing a person being shot there and another about five shots fired on nearby Kentucky Street.
When officers arrived, they found Bates lying face down on the sidewalk and pronounced him dead at the scene.
Officers also found 11 witnesses who they claim offered "broadly consistent statements" covering the events of the night.
According to the witnesses, several of them and Bates were at a party at a residence on Dunham Street. Morgan-Reed arrived in a silver Dodge Journey with others and joined the party.
Allegedly, Morgan-Reed gave some witnesses his number and displayed a Glock 19 handgun with an extended magazine, with which he made threats.
The witnesses then stated Morgan-Reed, Bates, and another witness went to smoke inside the Dodge. After this, Bates ran from the car, claiming someone tried to rob him. From there, multiple people were seen running around the area.
Witnesses described seeing Bates in the street when they heard gunfire, with the shooter described as hiding in the bushes.
Witnesses also say they believe Morgan-Reed is the shooter, as they think everyone else at the party returned there for police assistance.
On Kentucky Street, officers say they found spent casings believed to be fired from a Glock and an iPhone with the same registered number as the one witnesses say Morgan-Reed gave them.
No casings were found with Bates' body, though officers did locate a laser-sight gun attachment that appeared to be discarded near the Dodge.
Twelve hours after the shooting, officers located Morgan-Reed in La Porte and interviewed him.
Allegedly, Morgan-Reed confirmed he brought a handgun with an extended magazine to the party at the Dunham Street home, though he denied displaying the gun or making threats, claiming that he instead engaged in "play fighting."
Morgan-Reed also confirmed that he, Bates, and a witness had been in the Dodge shortly before the shooting. He also noted that all three of them had a gun and that unexpectedly, one or both of the other occupants attempted to rob him by pointing a gun at him and telling him not to move.
Morgan-Reed went on to note that he jumped out of the car and ran away until he circled the block and saw two figures on Kentucky Street. Morgan-Reed believed one to be Bates, and he hid. Morgan-Reed believed Bates was carrying something, and when Bates crossed Dunham Street, Morgan-Reed fired his gun at him and ran again.
Morgan-Reed explained that he then ran around the neighborhood for half an hour, at one point tripping and losing his gun.
Morgan-Reed then stated he called his girlfriend to get him out of the county. He then learned of the police interviewing witnesses at the party.
The next morning, Morgan-Reed claimed, he visited the La Porte County Jail to see if he had a warrant prior to his arrest.
Morgan-Reed is being held in the St. Joseph County Jail without bond, as he is considered a flight risk. His arraignment is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
