Saturnino Rios-Perez CASS COUNTY. Mich. -- The Cass County Prosecutor's Office announced Saturnino Rios-Perez was found guilty of Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated following a jury trial on Tuesday.
The charge stemmed from an incident on Easter Sunday, April 20.
On that afternoon, members of the Marcellus Volunteer Fire Department responded to a single-vehicle crash.
First responders arrived to find a damaged vehicle, but before making contact with the driver, the vehicle drove away.
The Marcellus Volunteer Fire Department then followed the vehicle for around two miles on Miller Road in Marcellus Township.
At that point, the chief noted the vehicle behaving erratically, crossing into the lane of on-coming traffic and veering off the road while narrowly avoiding several mailboxes.
After Cass County dispatch was notified of the situation, deputies from the Cass County Sheriff's Office responded.
The deputies located the vehicle stopped at a Miller Road residence with the only person at the home, Rios-Perez, standing next to the open driver's door of the damaged vehicle.
Deputies noticed a strong odor of alcohol coming from Rios-Perez and observed fresh, still bleeding injuries, to his face.
Authorities say Rios-Perez appeared confused and was unable to balance on his own.
Rios-Perez also admitted to having recently consumed beer.
He was then taken to the hospital for a blood draw pursuant to a search warrant.
The toxicology analysis by the Michigan State Police Forensic Science Division showed Rios-Perez's blood alcohol concentration was .287 percent, substantially over the legal limit of less than .08 percent.
This is Rios-Perez's second drunk driving conviction and resulted in him being sentenced to 14 days in jail.
