ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind -- A St. Joseph County man is officially charged in an incident that led to a SWAT standoff.

40-year-old Adam Spencer is charged with Strangulation, Domestic Battery, and Residential Entry - all felonies.

Officers were called to a home the 50000 block of Michigan Street on August 23. The victim alleges Spencer grabbed them by their throat tightly. They allege they were in and out of consciousness three different times. The victim also told officers Spencer bit her bottom lip; officials say officers noticed injuries to the victim's lip and neck at the scene.

Court documents show Spencer allegedly dragged the victim out of the house while shaking her and putting pressure on her throat. The victim alleges Spencer ran away after they grabbed his genitals.

The victim alleges Spencer was able to break into the home using a credit card, or something similar, to slide the back door lock open. 

Officials allegedly viewed security footage showing Spencer coming onto the front porch.

Two days later, the victim allegedly told officers Spencer had been repeatedly calling and texting her.

Officers then went to a home in the 1000 block of Howard Street in Mishawaka. Spencer allegedly answered the door but then shut it on the officers. Spencer allegedly ran to a camper at the back of the property, eventually barricading himself. He allegedly told officers that, per court documents, "they weren't going to get him without a fight and that he wasn't going back alive."

Officials say Spencer eventually surrendered and was taken into custody.

Spencer's initial hearing is scheduled for September 18.
