Marshall County EMA warns of scam texts, emails from Indiana agencies

UPDATE: The Indiana Office of Technology announced it is aware of fraudulent messages purportedly sent by state agencies about collecting tolls.
Officials say these messages are scams, and users should not click on any of the links.
They add that the state does not send unpaid toll notifications via text or email messages.
IOT is working with the company that was used to deliver those messages to stop any further communications.
Indiana had a contract with this company which ended on Dec. 31, 2024, but they did not remove the state's account.
Officials say a contractor's account was hacked and used to send those messages.
IOT is not aware of any current state systems being compromised.
Indiana agencies no longer use GovDelivery to distribute agency messages and transitioned to Salesforce Marketing Cloud for this service in late 2024.
“These scams are dangerous, deceptive, and disruptive. I want to remind all Hoosiers to be cautious before opening emails and clicking on any unsolicited links, especially those that request personal information or direct you to unfamiliar websites. Your security is our top priority,” said Diego Morales, Indiana Secretary of State.
The secretary of state's office says there's no indication that these phishing emails are imitating emails from their office, but emails are going to individuals/entities that engage with their office.
ORIGINAL: MARSHALL COUNTY, Ind. -- The Marshall County Emergency Management Agency is warning residents not to click on any links sent from Indiana state agencies at this time.
EMA officials say the scam emails have the subject line titled "TxTag Account Suspension Warning," and that you should immediately delete these messages.
These aren't legitimate messages from the state.
The State of Indiana is aware of the situation and is currently investigating.
