Mayor, neighbors react to violent weekend across South Bend
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Mayor James Mueller spoke to the media Monday about the violent weekend across South Bend, which included three separate shootings and four injuries, two of which were juveniles.
Friday night, a 20-year-old man was shot in the 300 block of La Porte Avenue. One neighbor in the area said there was a party happening nearby when they heard shots and saw several people run through the alley in front of their house shortly after the shooting. The 20-year-old victim is believed to have non-life-threatening injuries.
Saturday, around 2 a.m., a 12-year-old boy was shot near Howard and Lawrence streets on the northeast side of the city. ABC57 spoke with neighbors in the area, but none were able to share what happened or how the violence began. Police say the boy's injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.
Sunday evening, one adult and an eight-year-old girl were shot in the 700 block of Lindenwood Drive. Neighbors tell ABC57 that a birthday party was happening around the time of the shooting. At last check, the eight-year-old girl remained in critical condition. Mayor Mueller described this situation as "wrong place at the wrong time."
At Monday's press conference, Mayor Mueller also said that overall violent crime is still down, and they hope for incidents to decrease as back-to-school season continues.
The South Bend Police Department says their violent crimes unit is working around-the-clock on all three shootings.
No arrests have been made so far.
