MDOT says final year of rebuilding I-94 project in Berrien County has begun

ABC 57

BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. -- The Michigan Department of Transportation announced work resumes Monday to rebuild 8.5 miles of I-94 and four bridges, plus repair nine other bridges between Puetz Road and Britain Avenue.

MDOT says this is the final year of the three-year $204 million investment, which was funded in part by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Rebuilding Michigan program.

Crews will rebuild eastbound I-94 between Washington Avenue and Britain Avenue beginning the following week with single-lane closures on I-94 and a temporary barrier wall, officials said.

MDOT states two lanes of I-94 will be open in each direction during this work, but there will be ramp closures and intermittent local road closures.

As part of the project, crews will install cable guardrail, build culverts, improve drainage, and install new signs.

In March, the following ramps will be closed:

  • M-63 (Niles Road) Exit 27 to eastbound I-94. Detour posted on M-139 and Napier Avenue.
  • M-139 Exit 28 to eastbound I-94. Detour posted on M-139 and Napier Avenue.
  • Pipestone Road entrance ramp to eastbound I-94. Detour posted on Pipestone Road and Napier Avenue.
  • Eastbound I-94 Exit 30 to Napier Avenue. Detour posted on M-139 and Napier Avenue.

Additional closures and detours will be announced as they are scheduled.

You can stay up to date on current closures on Mi Drive.
