COLOMA, Mich. -- There's a new furry friend at Coloma Schools.
Meet Mavis, the nine-month-old puppy who will soon become a certified therapy dog.
Coloma Elementary English teacher and Mavis's owner Natalie Contreras always had the idea of having a therapy dog at Coloma Schools.
And after speaking with the principal and superintendent, she was able to make that dream a reality.
She’s already winning hearts, and soon, she’ll be helping students with social and emotional support.
Mavis is set to take her certification test in April when she turns one.
The goal is for her to eventually be at school every single day.
Contreras says her presence is already making a difference with a positive impact on students.
She says the response has been great, with many embracing her as part of the Coloma Schools family.
"Mavis is special because she started out as a young puppy with a lot of brains and a lot of calm energy. She had that coming to me. A lot of puppies are wild and rambunctious, and it's hard to control. She just turned on the learning. As soon as I started working with her, it was an immediate response. She's made for therapy," Contreras said.
