Michiana Chili Cookoff benefits local food banks

MISHAWAKA, Ind. --  The 27th annual Michiana Chili Cookoff took place at Ironworks Plaza in Mishawaka, drawing one of its largest crowds ever, according to event organizers.

The cookoff not only showcased local culinary talent but also served as a fundraiser for the Food Bank of Northern Indiana.

Bela Szalay, a chef at Life Treatment Centers, has been participating in the event for 15 years. His chili, a chicken white chili with a touch of habanero and cilantro, was just one of the many offerings at the cookoff. Szalay emphasized the importance of the event, not only as a chance to share his recipes but as a way to support those in need.

“There are a lot of people out there who need a little bit of extra help to make it to the next paycheck.” Szalay said.

Each year, the South Bend Chefs and Cooks Association partners with the Food Bank of Northern Indiana to raise funds for the community.

April Howell, a chef at Cultivate Food Rescue, shared that this year’s cookoff helped raise approximately $3,000 to $4,000 for the food bank.

“It’s really important that we all pull together, especially right now,” Howell said.

The cookoff featured a wide range of chili recipes from local restaurants, as well as culinary students gaining hands-on experience. Each booth was tasked with preparing over ten gallons of chili to meet the high demand.

While the competition was fierce, only one team could be named the best chili in Michiana. This year, Legends by Notre Dame took home the trophy. However, organizers emphasized that the true victory lies in the event’s ability to help those in need ahead of the busy holiday season.
