SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Millions of people across the country celebrated Earth Day on Sunday, including those right here in Michiana.
Earth Day is an annual event demonstrating support for protecting the environment people live in.
Below are some of the events happening in the area:
- Earth Day Open House: Nature walks, recycling information from 2 to 4 p.m. at Elbel Park Golf Course at 26595 Auten Road, South Bend
- Earth Day Celebration: Recycled crafts, lectures from environmental experts, daffodil show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Fernwood Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve at 13988 Range Line Road, Niles
Every year, there is a national Earth Day theme. This year’s theme is “End Plastic Pollution”. Earth Day Network suggests recycling or reusing plastic materials. The organization also lists introducing legislation to local leaders.
The organization also created a plastic pollution calculator. Users enter daily and monthly plastic use, then the calculator calculates a user’s yearly plastic consumption and creates a reduction plan. That calculator can be found here.
