Michigan City man arrested for allegedly making explosives, plotting to kill people

La Porte County Jail: Matthew Schutz

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- Documents from the La Porte Superior Court 1 reveal a 41-year-old Michigan City man was arrested and charged with several felonies on March 11 following a 911 call leading to an investigation.

The suspect, Matthew Schutz, has been charged with Attempted Murder, a Level 1 Felony, Possession of a Destructive Device or Explosive, a Level 2 Felony, Stalking where defendant threatens sexual battery serious bodily injury or death, a Level 5 Felony, and Resisting Law Enforcement, a Misdemeanor.

Schutz had his first hearing Tuesday and has no future court dates at this time.

The probable cause affidavit states on March 11, around 5:56 p.m., a 911 call came in from a woman who said she had a Protection Order against Schutz and that he was heading to the Full Gospel Church at 2700 Ohio St. with explosives to shoot another man.

The woman then told police Schutz planned to go to her house to kill her and her family. She said Schutz drives a red truck.

Police confirmed the Protection Order was in place which prohibits Shutz from contacting the woman.

At around 6:06 p.m. that day, an officer with the Michigan City Police Department arrived at Full Gospel Church. Upon arrival, a red 2005 Chevy Silverado was observed in the parking lot.

The police then learned Schutz was sitting at the back of the church. The officer approached him and asked him to step out to chat.

Once in the foyer, police say the officer told Schutz he was going to pat him down and to keep his hands out of his pockets.

Documents state that's when the officer felt a cylindrical object in a pocket of his hooded sweatshirt.

Schutz allegedly told the officer it was a firework. When the officer attempted to take the object out, Schutz said, "F*** that," before pulling away and running towards the exit.

With assistance from other officers on scene, Schutz was subdued and handcuffed. Upon searching his pockets, police found five black cylindrical objects with wicks in his pockets.

Meanwhile, at the original caller's home, police were given access to her cell phone's text messages. Police say the messages between the woman and Schutz appear to show various threats to kill a man, the woman, her family, and himself.

Investigators then requested assistance from the Porter County Bomb Squad. The woman was also able to provide photos from inside Schutz' home at 210 Brinkman Ave, where he'd allegedly manufactured destructive/explosive devices.

A search warrant was requested and granted for the residence. Police then interviewed the man Schutz was allegedly planning to kill at the church. This man told police he didn't know why Schutz would want to harm him.

At around 9 p.m., the same day, polices, detectives, and members of the bomb squad arrived at Schutz' home to execute the search warrant. Police say the search uncovered evidence supporting the manufacturing/ possession of items used for destructive devices/ explosives.

Authorities say a field test by the bomb squad revealed one of the powders resulted in a presumptive positive for flash powder.

On March 12, Schutz was interviewed at the Michigan City Police Department.

Schutz was asked about the various threatening messages to the woman, to which he confirmed he made. He said he made those threats out of anger because of the woman's personal decisions.

Investigators say Schutz also discussed his knowledge of manufacturing explosives and where to purchase the required contents.

Investigators asked if he'd ever recorded a measurement for the destructive force of his devices, to which he said that one of the devices in his possession, at the time of arrest, could cause serious bodily injury.
