ABC 57 MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- The Michigan City Police Department reports the La Porte County Regional Dispatch received a call regarding a crash at the intersection of E. William Street and Pine Street around 4:35 p.m., Monday.
Officers arrived to find a motorcyclist, identified as 34-year-old Brandon Summerlin of Michigan City, suffering from life-threatening injuries.
Summerlin was airlifted to a hospital in South Bend where he was later pronounced dead.
Authorities' investigation determined Summerlin was traveling south on Pine Street toward E. William Street.
At the same time, a vehicle attempted to turn south onto Pine Street from E. William Street.
The vehicle continued into the motorcycle's path which resulted in Summerlin applying his brakes,
Summerlin then fell off the motorcycle, landing on the pavement, resulting in fatal injuries.
Police say the motorcycle never collided with the vehicle.
Officers say Summerlin wasn't wearing a helmet or other protective gear at the time of the crash.
The driver of the vehicle was taken to Franciscan Health Hospital in Michigan City for a chemical test, which is required by Indiana law when a driver is involved in a serious bodily injury or fatal crash.
Police say toxicology results for Summerlin and driver are pending.
