Multiple departments respond to large barn fire Sunday, crews return Monday

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- Saint Joseph County Fire Territory units responded to barn fire in the 27000 block of Early Road around 5 p.m. Sunday.
Crews arrived to find a large agricultural barn on fire.
Firefighters began attacking the fire, but due to the size and intensity of the incident, fire officials upgraded it to a Three Alarm response to bring in additional resources.
Crews from New Carlisle, Clay, Liberty Township, Centre Township, Galien, South Bend, Bertrand, and Penn Township fire departments responded to assist.
Fire officials said due to the contents of the barn, it was likely to continue to smolder and smoke for several hours.
The scene was monitored by fire officials and the property owner to be sure it was controlled. Crews remained on scene late into the night to bring the fire under control.
Fire Command continued to monitor the scene and Monday morning, the decision was made to return to the scene as too much fire and smoke were still emitting from the structure.
SJCFT crew arrived on scene Monday to resume fire operations and continue overhauling the scene.
Units will stay on site for an extended period of time Monday to work on the remaining hot spots.
No injuries have been reported.
The public is asked to use caution in the area and give crews space to work safely.
