Multiple fire departments respond to car and house fire Sunday morning

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. -- The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety reports crews responded to at least two fires Sunday morning.

Fire officials say around midnight Sunday BHDPS responded to a vehicle fire in the 200 Block of W. May Street.

The report states first responders found two vehicles, a fence, and a house on fire.

Fire officials say while the fire was quickly knocked down, there was an extensive amount of overhaul.

BHPS was assisted by St. Joseph Department of Public Safety and Benton Charter Township Fire Department.

There were no injuries and officials say the fire appears to have started from an electrical malfunction in one of the vehicles.

Later that morning around 3 a.m., BHDPS responded to 877 Nate Wells Sr. Dr. for a house fire.

Units arrived to find fire coming from a vacant residence.

Fire officials say the fire was quickly handled and a search of the residence found no one inside.

BHDPS was assisted by St. Joseph Department of Public Safety and Benton Charter Township Fire Department along with Medic 1 Ambulance.

No injuries were reported, and the fire is considered suspicious in nature.

BHDPS states they had a busy night with both fire and police calls throughout the city including a very large illegal gathering.

These two fires mark seven house fires in a 36-hour period.
