"My Brother's Keeper" program in full-swing in Elkhart

One initiative started by President Obama is impacting lives in Michiana.

President Obama issued a challenge to cities, towns, and counties back in September 2014 to become what he calls “My Brother’s Keeper” communities.

The challenge encourages communities to implement cradle-to-college-to-career programs that will help the lives of younger people.

Nearly 200 kids gathered at the Lerner Theater in Elkhart Thursday to learn more about the program.

“Their situation right now doesn’t have to be their situation forever. There are people and systems in place that want to get a better result for them and to give them better opportunities and there’s a commitment to doing that here in Elkhart,” says motivational speaker Hasan Davis.

Nearly 200 mayors, tribal leaders, and county executives across 43 states as well as the District of Columbia have accepted the challenge.
