National Safe Place Awareness Week

SOUTH BEND, Ind.-- Nearly 3,000,000 children run away from home each year, and the local Youth Service Bureau wants to make sure they have a safe place to go.

It is National Safe Place Awareness Week.

Yellow signs signal places kids can go if they are in trouble.

St. Joseph County has 123 safe places, like Burger King and Taco Bell.

It's as easy as getting on a Transpo Bus and asking for help.

Bonnie Stycker with The Youth Service Bureau said, "Tell the bus driver that I really want to access safe place.  The bus driver will bring you on board.  You don't pay, and he will take you and he will take the person back to the central drop off in downtown South Bend."

Other safe place areas include local fire stations, libraries, Kroger and many more.
