INDOT and South Bend Police advise against road travel heading into Monday
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- As the winter storm warning continues into the overnight hours across Michiana, those looking ahead to their morning commute need to proceed with caution.
Road conditions are expected to worsen with ice and slush overnight. The South Bend Police Department reported nearly white-out conditions as early in the evening as 6 P.M., advising residents to stay off the roads if possible as they were responding to multiple crashes.
Cassandra Bajek, Publicb Relations Director for INDOT Northwest, says that about 100 snow plow drivers are actively clearing roads around Northwest Indiana as of Sunday night.
While INDOT also advises against traveling on roads in these conditions, they are able to provide drivers a live look at road conditions before they head out.
“We do have our 511in.org website,” Bajek says. “We have interstate cameras, then some other intersections that have cameras set up where you can look at real time road conditions… So if you know you’re going to be on State Road 23, you can go and look and see how recently a plow has been through there and what it looked like when a plow was going through that route.”
INDOTS website also has tips for drivers on staying safe during winter weather, noting the importance of driving slow and keeping distance between yourself and other drivers.
