New beginnings as SBCSC schools start their first day
SOUTH BEND, Ind -- Wednesday marks the start of SBCSC schools. ABC 57’s Sidney Moore spoke with the new superintendent Mansour Eid about what he expects during his first term in this role.
Eid says, “We have imbued a new this administration and this board has given the corporation a new life. Basically, they are supporting teachers, they are supporting administrators, they're supporting students, they're supporting parents. We are looking forward to a great school year.”
ABC 57’s Sidney Moore also spoke with Transportation Director Bob Durm about the national bus shortage and how South Bend Schools are combatting this issue. He explains they are hoping to use a new bus route creation system next year.
A survey was sent out for families who left the district and transportation issues were a top reason for their departure.
This year Harrison Elementary got a new principal who is very familiar with the school. She was a teacher at Harrison for over 10 years and tells ABC 57’s Sidney Moore that she is excited to be back as the new principal.
This year South Bend Community Schools were still behind in ILEARN scoring. Movement in a positive direction is happening as scores for math and language arts went up around two percent since last year.
Harrison Elementary Principal Sally Eggleston explains, “We are just going to look at each student and their needs and put interventions in place and monitor and use data to help them grow and soar. Enrollment numbers at Harrison elementary are also on the rise! Eggleston says, “every day we're getting more and more. It's crazy and exciting too. So that means that people are choosing South Bend schools, and that makes us happy, awesome.”
