NHTSA requiring back up cameras in new vehicles

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a mandate Monday that requires all vehicles manufactured after May 2018 be equipped with rear visibility technology.

It will require back-up cameras on all vehicles under 10,000 pounds including trucks and buses.

The rear field of view must include a 10-foot by 20-foot zone directly behind the vehicle.

The rule was prompted by consumer groups and families that have been touched by tragedies involving back over accidents, especially those involving kids in parking lots.
