Niles businesses on edge after armed robbery

NILES, Mich. -- The Berrien County Sheriff's Department is searching for the two thieves responsible for robbing the Check n' Go on South 11th Street in Niles.

Just before 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, two men pulled out a gun and demanded money.

Michael Regin works as a sales associate at Niles Mattress Warehouse, two stores down from the Check n' Go. He says he was working when, all of a sudden, police cars swarmed the parking lot.

"It’s one thing to see a police car, but when you see a whole parking lot of police cars it's different, it freaked me out".

It was not long before word spread to all the businesses that two men had walked into the Check n’ Go, pulled out a gun and demanded money. Surveillance video captured the tense moments when the men forced one employee to the ground and grabbed the money from the register.

"Everybody goes to work every day and everybody wants to go home at the end of the night, so to hear something like this happened is just scary".

As disturbing as it was, Regin says this is not the first time the Check n' Go and other businesses in the plaza have been the target of an armed robbery.

Just one year ago, the neighboring Papa John's was held up at gunpoint. "It’s sort of a thing that has been happening over the past four or five years, so unfortunately this isn’t something new," says Regin.
