Niles YMCA becomes safe haven during the effects of Sandy
NILES, Mich. -- Tuesday, several schools in Niles closed because of power outages but the YMCA remained open and it quickly became the place to be.
It offered showers for free to members and even non-members who didn't have power.
Employees at the "Y" said everyone was welcome. They also kept the kids busy with an open gym and Halloween festivities.
"On a day like today, if they are coming in for showers or extra activities, things like that, we do not charge for families coming in who need a shower or a safe place to be," said Denise Petters, Health and Fitness Directory at the Niles-Buchanan YMCA.
We called again to see how everyone was doing and no families affected by power outages were staying there.
