Notre Dame gets green light on Douglas Road construction

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Notre Dame got the green light go-ahead Tuesday night to reroute Douglas Road.

The St. Joseph County Council voted 7-0 in favor of the new road construction project.

The meeting lasted close to four hours as both sides spoke passionately for and against the plan.

In the end, the potential economic and tourism benefit outweighed the concerns of those living in the nearby Town of Indian Village.

Many in attendance who spoke out against the measure said the project seemed rushed, and hoped to have the Council delay the vote.

County Commissioners will officially vote the project into a reality next week.
