Notre Dame takes down Georgia Tech 89-74 behind Certa’s career-high 37

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Irish were without leading scorer Jalen Haralson, who averages 15.5 points per game. Head coach Micah Shrewsberry confirmed Haralson tweaked his ankle in practice Friday. Shrewsberry also noted a cold has been circulating within the team, explaining why guard Cole Certa was listed as questionable before tipoff.

However, that did not slow Certa. The junior poured in a career-high 37 points, drilling seven three-pointers and carrying the Irish offense from start to finish. Shrewsberry said he repeatedly checked in with Certa during the game to see if he needed a break. Each time, Certa declined.

Notre Dame came out firing from beyond the arc, building a 12-point halftime lead behind 21 first-half points from Certa. Meanwhile, Braeden Shrewsberry added key scoring early as the Irish controlled the tempo.

After the break, Notre Dame pushed its lead to as many as 25 points during a decisive second-half stretch. A mid-half run sparked by Logan Imes helped the Irish separate for good, energizing the home crowd.

Braeden Shrewsberry finished with 20 points, while Imes added 14 points and nine rebounds to round out a balanced effort.

For Georgia Tech, Kowacie Reeves Jr. led the Yellow Jackets with 16 points and Baye Ndongo grabbed double-digit rebounds, but the visitors could not keep pace with Notre Dame’s perimeter shooting.

“When starters are out it just gives an opportunity for guys to showcase what they can do,” Micah Shrewsberry said. “You know Cole’s been doing it, but I thought this was great for Logan to just believe in him and we know how good he could be for us.”

With the win, Notre Dame continues its push for a spot in the ACC tournament. Fifteen of the league’s 18 teams qualify, and the Irish entered the weekend sitting 17th in the standings.

Notre Dame returns to action next Saturday against Pittsburgh, currently the lowest-ranked team in the conference, before facing No. 4 Duke and closing the regular season with three more ACC matchups.
