NOW: NWI Charcot Marie Tooth Disease Association to host walk for awareness on rare disease

LAKE COUNTY, Ind. -- Charcot Marie Tooth Disease (CMT) is a neurological disorder that damages the nerves that carry commands between your arms and legs to your brain. While rare, CMTA cites it affects over 3 million people worldwide.

CMTA hosts several support events to help raise awareness and money to go towards things like research and summer camps for kids affected by this rare disease. ABC57's Sidney Moore spoke with one Michiana resident who's dealt with this firsthand for more than 15 years.

Aimee Trammell says, "I'm actually pretty fortunate. I have very subtle symptoms. A lot of people don't know that I have it, but there are a lot more severe symptoms. A lot of individuals with CMT will wear AFOs, like bracing on their legs. They'll also be in wheelchairs. There's a lot of crippling of the hands. The biggest things that I personally experience is I don't feel my toes, so I really struggle with balance quite a bit. So, working on that has obviously helped me over the years, and then in my hands, I do not have very much feeling in my fingertips."

The Walk 4 CMT will be on Sept. 5 at the Lake County Fairgrounds in Crown Point, Indiana. For more details on how you can participate visit the NWI Walk 4 CMT - Campaign website.
