Officer shoots aggressive dog already deemed dangerous

Mishawaka Police are investigating an officer involved shooting of a dog that happened Tuesday morning.

Officers were in the 500 block of Grove Street to execute an arrest warrant when a large dog charged at an officer, reports said.

The officer shot the dog to try to stop the attack, reports said.

The dog suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Police said there is a history of calls and reports with the St. Joseph County Humane Society regarding the dog, including 3 dog bite cases. The dog bit one child and two other dogs, reports said.

Because of the dog bite cases, the dog is considered a Dangerous Dog which requires a special license and insurance, reports said.

The dog was also required to be on a leash with a muzzle when outside the house or outside a kennel, police said.
