Officers recover firearms, drugs following traffic stop

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - One man was arrested after officers recovered numerous drugs and firearms following a traffic stop, according to the South Bend Police Department.

Darryl Peak, 29, was arrested on the following charges:

  • Four counts of unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon
  • One count of possession of cocaine
  • One count of possession of marijuana
  • One count of possession of a narcotic drug
  • One count of dealing in cocaine

On Tuesday, officers with the police department's Strategic Focus Unit initiated a traffic stop in the area of Bruce and Douglas streets after the Jeep's driver didn't signal a turn onto Bruce Street, reports said.

When officers stopped the vehicle, the driver, later identified as Darryl Peak, got out of the vehicle and told officers his name was James Peak.

While speaking with Peak, officers saw an AR pistol in plain view, according to reports.

Peak allegedly told police there was marijuana in the Jeep.

When officers tried to detain Peak, he allegedly locked his arms, preventing them from restraining him.

Peak was taken to the police department, where he was eventually identified as Darryl Peak.

During his interview, Peak said there would be firearms, marijuana, crack cocaine, and other possible controlled substances in the Jeep, reports said.

He told officers he was instructed to collect the items and was going to deliver them later, according to reports.

Peak told police he's the middle man in dealings for cocaine, marijuana, and firearms, according to reports.

Officers were granted a search warrant for the Jeep and during the search, recovered three handguns and an AR-15, over a pound of marijuana, 14 grams of cocaine, 24 grams of fentanyl, plastic gloves, packaging material, and digital scales, reports said.

Peak is being held at the St. Joseph County Jail on a $50,000 cash bond.

He is due in court on September 22.
