OMG: Woman walking and texting falls into Lake Michigan

ST JOSEPH, Mich. – A new reason to not text and walk!

Police say Bonnie Miller of Benton Harbor was walking on the pier in St. Joseph while texting on Monday. She did not see the end of the pier and walked right off the edge into the lake.

She had trouble treading water, so a Good Samaritan, Rebecca Van Zant of Mishawaka, jumped in to help her!

The two women were rescued on the river side of the South Pier on Lake Michigan around 9:30 p.m.

St Joseph Police and firefighters arrived on the scene to find the women in the water and a man holding a ladder on the side of the pier.

Both Miller and Van Zant were able to stay afloat until rescue crews used a rope to pull them out.

The Saint Joseph Fire Department, Michigan State Police, and the United States Coast Guard assisted with the rescue effort.
