Pedestrian killed in Michigan City

Michigan City Police are investigating a fatal accident involving a pedestrian who had been in another accident an hour earlier.

At approximately 9:24 p.m. officers were called to an accident near the entrance to a business in the 3700 block of Michigan Boulevard.

A man was critically injured when he was struck by a car driving on Michigan Boulevard.

The 20-year-old victim was taken to St. Anthony's Hospital where he died.

During the investigation, police learned the victim was walking in the westbound lane of Michigan Boulevard with a 19-year-old friend.

Police said the victim and friend were walking in the far right side of the westbound lane when a driver in the right westbound lane approached.

The driver didn't see the pedestrians until seconds before the impact.

The vehicle's right front bumper struck the back of the victim.

The driver was taken to the hospital for standard drug and alcohol tests because of it being a fatal accident. The driver was cooperative.

Police said the victim and the friend were involved in another accident about an hour before the victim was struck.

The prior accident was at Michigan Boulevard and Rogers Avenue.

Police said the victim was driving a vehicle which ended up in a ditch along the road.

Investigations into both accidents are ongoing.
