Pet Adoption Event encourages responsible pet ownership in Mishawaka
MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- The first pet adoption event of the year kicked off at PetSmart in Mishawaka, as Heartland Animal Rescue worked to find homes for pets and assist potential pet owners in making informed decisions.
The holiday season is a popular time for adopting furry companions, but animal welfare organizations stress the importance of understanding that pets are a long-term commitment.
According to the non-profit Shelter Animals Count, 175,000 animals were taken into shelters nationwide in the first half of 2025 alone. Locally, shelters in St. Joseph County have reported struggling with overcrowding.
Crystal Buzas, Dog Department Director at Heartland Small Animal Rescue, noted the increasing challenges faced by rescues and shelters.
“People, you know, they have hardships and the rescues are full, and the shelters are full, and they don't know what to do with their animals, so they dump them,” she said.
Adoptions, especially for dogs, tend to peak during the holiday season. However, Buzas urges potential adopters to consider the long-term responsibility of owning a pet.
“We always ask that, you know, as you're making those decisions of getting a pet for this time of year,” Buzas said. “Are you ready to make a 10-year commitment?”
Volunteers at events like this one advocate for responsible adoption practices. Buzas emphasizes that pets should not be given as last-minute holiday presents.
In addition to helping prospective owners find a good match, volunteers here also ensure families are prepared for the responsibility of adopting. They screen families carefully and make sure they leave with the necessary supplies. New owners are provided with a full medical record for their new pet and are informed about any pending medical costs for vaccinations or spay/neuter treatments.
“These events allow us to talk with people and educate them, even if they're not adopting,” Buzas said.
If you’re considering bringing a new pet into your home this year, volunteers recommend attending events like these to ensure you are making a responsible decision for both you and your family.
