Petition to recall two Benton Charter Township officials approved

A Berrien County resident is working to get two Benton Charter Township elected officials removed from office.

On Monday, the Berrien County Election Committee approved a recall petition for Treasurer Debbie Boothby and Clerk Carolyn Phillips.

The reason stated in the petition is for voting ‘yes' to appoint Kevin D. White as the township's supervisor.

Boothby did not want to talk to ABC57 about the matter, but did chat with others and showed them the recall petition.

The election commission said the petitioner will need to receive 781 signatures for each official, to trigger a recall election.

In the state of Michigan, that number is based upon 25% of votes cast from Benton Charter Township in the 2014 Gubernatorial Election.

The signatures need to be filed by July 31st to prompt a special recall election in November.
