Police provide update on officer injured in accident during training exercise

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The South Bend Police sergeant who was injured in an accident at the bomb training/ordnance disposal site on Monday is continuing to receive treatment at an Indianapolis hospital.

Family members say Sergeant Harvey Mills is joking with the doctors and nurses even though he suffered facial fractures, eye and ear injuries, burns, shrapnel wounds and a broken arm.

The ATF is investigating at the request of South Bend Police Chief Ruszkowski.

An internal review is also being conducted.

Police said during bomb squad training they are either defusing/disarming devices or instruments, and/or conducting court ordered destruction of evidence.
