Indiana Michigan Power estimated 17,000 of their customers lost power including 1,875 from the South Bend area and 1,000 in Elkhart.
Southwest Michigan lost power including 1,875 in Buchanan, 425 in Benton Harbor and less than 100 in Three Rivers.
Some damage factors included heavy rain, lightning and broken trees and branches, causing equipment outages.
The storm produced more than 40 damaged poles and 200 spans of wire down.
At 10 a.m. on July 29, 50% of customers had power restored with a projected 90% of restoration by 11 p.m.
In the meantime, I&M asks that customers adhere to safety information:
- Never touch downed power lines. If equipment is down or sparking call I&M at 1-800-311-4634 or 911.
- Don't go near areas where power equipment is submerged.
- Be careful around debris. Trees could fall at any moment. Be alert and look up.
- If traffic lights aren't functioning, use caution and be mindful of first responders and utility workers on the road.
- Don't approach I&M crews who are restoring power.
- Don't plug generators into the circuit box. Portable generators "backfeed" electricity up the line and risk repair workers and the public.
