Preparations underway for South Bend’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Preparations are underway for South Bend’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade, with festivities beginning before the holiday this year.
St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Tuesday this year, but celebrations are kicking off early throughout the weekend. The parade is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Saturday in the East Bank Village area.
Additional celebrations are also planned around the region. In Mishawaka, Chicory Café will host its own St. Patrick’s Day party in the afternoon.
South Bend Police say officers will be present to help manage the larger crowds and increased foot traffic.
Sergent Javier Bourn with the South Bend Police Department says warmer weather and community events often bring more people outside, which can sometimes lead to an increase in calls for service.
Officers encourage people to be aware of their limits, avoid leaving drinks unattended, and stay with friends while attending crowded events.
Authorities also suggest letting a trusted family member know where you are and establishing a meeting point with friends in case your group becomes separated.
Police say taking simple precautions can help ensure everyone enjoys a safe and fun St. Patrick’s Day weekend.
