Prison visitor accused of attempting to bring drugs into facility

LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- A visitor to the Westville Correctional Facility was taken into custody after she allegedly attempted to bring drugs into the facility, according to the Indiana Department of Corrections.

Joanna Deller, of Winamac, was arrested on a preliminary charge of trafficking a controlled substance at the facility on Monday.

IDOC said Deller went to the facility to visit with inmate Scott Freemen. She allegedly had 74 small strips of a drug believed to be Suboxone in sealed packages within a balloon.

Correctional officers found the balloon after conducting the mandatory entrance search.

She surrendered the contraband and was transported to the LaPorte County Jail for booking.

Freeman is serving a 14-year sentence for robbery. Freeman is currently in a restricted status housing unit under investigation.
