Raccoon causes thousands to lose power early Tuesday morning

CASSOPOLIS, Mich. -- Midwest Energy and Communications reported 2,014 customers were without power Tuesday around 12:31 a.m.

MEC officials say the residents affected were mostly in the townships of Jefferson, Howard, Lagrange, Pokagon, and Calvin.

Crews were immediately sent out to investigate the cause.

Officials say the loss of power was due to an outage at a substation.

Upon investigating, MEC officials say the cause of the outage was due to a raccoon.

Although MEC stated it could take a few hours to restore power to residents, they reported full restoration only an hour later at 1:38 a.m.
