Rain delays US31 construction project

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- Downpours Thursday put a major road construction project on hold. INDOT crews expected to install two beams as part of the US31 project, but the rain cancelled those plans.

Now INDOT will try to install those beams on Friday.

Crews want drivers to avoid the areas where the construction is happening.

My advice to the public is if  is in that area just south of us 31 if you're able to avoid that area entirely tomorrow because if we're able to get those beam settings we'll be closing it for 20 minutes at a time," said Matt Deitchley, INDOT spokesman.

List of restrictions for the beam setting:

Closed: Ramp from northbound U.S. 31 to eastbound U.S. 20

Closed: Ramp from eastbound U.S. 20 to southbound U.S. 31

Closed: Northbound and southbound driving lanes of U.S. 31, between Bypass and Johnson Road

Two, 20 minute complete closures of U.S. 31, between Bypass and Johnson Road
